Waking Behavior

For as long as he could remember, Norman had viewed his father as “a complete failure as a father, husband, and wage earner.” Norman’s descriptive adjectives of his father include: inadequate, cold, unsuccessful, absent, unpleasant and unprotective. In the relationship he had with his son he was hostile, rejecting, and harsh. Even if this were all that was known about him and the father-son relationship, one would have predicted many difficulties for Norman in his attempt to move through the normal course of psychosexual development. But when one considers the even more unusual and potentially traumatic aspects of that relationship in the evidence which follows, there can be no doubt about the central importance of Norman’s relationship with his father in determining Norman’s subsequent psychological and interpersonal difficulties.

When Norman was four years old, his father forced him to suck his penis:

“I felt bewildered. The size of his erection frightened me. I had never been approached like that before by my father. In fact, I can’t recall ever having had sexual thoughts prior to that time. All I can remember is my father’s hypnotic, angry stare as I tried to push his penis away from my face. It depicted vengeance, retribution, destruction. The memory of that stare is vivid and was reinforced by subsequent ones. I feared for my life. I felt drawn by my father’s almost hypnotic force.”

This experience was relived in a dream he had, perhaps more than once, in late adolescence:

“I was a young boy, four years old. The room, the carpet were all familiar. My father was there. Something happened before the climax, but it’s difficult to remember. My father was walking toward me, staring like a hypnotist. I was frightened that if I backed up I’d fall off the edge or something. I woke up on the floor next to the bed.”

According to one of the hospital reports, this incestuous activity—Norman’s sucking of his father’s penis —continued until his father left the family. The report also suggests that although Norman was traumatized by the initial experience, he came to enjoy this unusual attention from his father. Norman’s latest report, made at the time of this present investigation, indicates his strong ambivalence:

“During the early years, I tried desperately to decide what to do about my father’s actions with me. I decided to do nothing, and I never did decide whether I was doing the right thing by doing nothing or whether I was sinning. I often had spells in which the feeling that I was being exploited was mingled with a feeling that I wanted to be exploited, and in the midst of these feelings came the feeling of erotic ecstasy, mingled with a feeling that I was taking something that I did not deserve to have. I then would pound my pillow in anguish at being involved in this human situation, and rage against the human condition that was manifested by my inability to cope with it and grasp the meaning of my father’s behavior.”
